ISDSI is an educational institution dedicated to teaching about sustainability. Our study abroad programs educate American students about the key issues in sustainability through a close collaboration with local communities.  We offer two different options for semester long programs: our expedition-based field studies program, or our Chiang Mai-based cultural studies program.  There are two semester options: fall and winter.   ISDSI calls our winter semester "spring."  ISDSI also offers summer programs.

Culture, Ecology, and Community (CEC) Semester
An Expedition-Based Learning Semester Across Thailand’s Diverse Landscapes

This field-intensive semester takes students deep into Thailand’s ecological and cultural diversity through a series of immersive expeditions. Instead of traditional classroom learning, students will trek through remote forests, kayak along tropical coastlines, and live with host families in indigenous and farming communities.

Society and Culture of Thailand and Southeast Asia (SCT) Semester
An Immersive Experience in the Cultural Heart of Southeast Asia—Chiang Mai

For students eager to immerse themselves in Thailand’s rich cultural traditions, this semester is centered in the historic city of Chiang Mai—a hub of art, history, and sustainability in northern Thailand.  The program blends academic coursework with hands-on experiences, offering a deep dive into Thai society, history, and arts.

Background:
The International Sustainable Development Studies Institute (ISDSI) is a recognized leader in innovative study-abroad programs. In 2005 ISDSI’s semester program was recognized as one of three “best practice” programs by the Institute of International Education (IIE) Andrew Heiskell Awards, and in 2006 was nominated as a UNESCO Centre of Excellence.
