Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month 2026

Dear Lakers,

As we move through the first few weeks of the semester, we also begin Hispanic Heritage Month, observed each year from September 15 to October 15. This is a time to recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latine/Latinx Americans, and to reflect on the many ways those contributions have shaped our communities.

Hispanic heritage is rich and diverse, spanning many generations, countries, languages and cultures. From artists and educators to scientists, activists, leaders and community builders, Hispanic and Latine/Latinx people have helped shape the world around us in countless ways.

At Grand Valley, we are proud of the Hispanic and Latine/Latinx students, faculty, staff and community members who bring their experiences and talents to the university. As we celebrate this month, I invite each of us to carry its spirit beyond October 15. Our shared humanity connects us, even when our experiences, backgrounds and/or perspectives differ. We can honor that connection by remaining curious, listening, and making space for others to be heard. These are small acts, but together they help create the kind of community we want at GVSU.

Hispanic Heritage Month is an invitation for all of us to participate. Attend an event, experience music or art, learn about a new tradition, share a meal or simply make space to connect. Explore what’s happening on campus and in the community to get started:

We hope you’ll take time this month to celebrate, learn, and connect with members of our Grand Valley community. These moments of learning and connection help us live out what it means to reach higher together.

In this moment, I also want to acknowledge a recent accomplishment: GVSU was recognized as one of the institutions to earn a 2026 Higher Education Excellence and Distinction (HEED) Award from Insight Into Academia magazine. This is because the work you all do to achieve academic excellence, create opportunities for belonging, and foster community-building across our campuses. I am honored to work at an institution that aspires to create a welcoming campus environment every day and want to share my thanks for each of you for helping to accomplish this.

As always, I’ll leave you with a quote. In the words of Dolores Huerta, American labor leader, feminist, and civil rights activist: “When a group of people get together, it’s collective power. You know that you’re doing it for the good.”

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Sincerely,

Robert Shorty, PhD

Reach Higher with Room to Breathe

You're invited to Reach Higher with Room to Breathe; Digital Literacy, Well-Being, and Career Readiness

Presented by the Division of People, Equity, and Culture

As GVSU continues to explore digital literacy and well-being as part of Reach Higher Together, we’re also asking a more human question: Can technology help create a little more room to breathe?

Artificial intelligence is already changing how we learn, work and prepare for what’s ahead. It offers opportunities to save time, simplify tasks and approach our work in new ways, but it also brings important questions about people, privacy, jobs, sustainability and what it means to stay human in an increasingly digital world.

Join us on September 24 for Reach Higher with Room to Breathe, a two-part conversation designed to help us better understand AI, consider where it can genuinely support our well-being, and explore what we need to keep at the center as we move forward: people.

KEYNOTE
September 24 | 9-9:50 a.m.
Grand River Room, Kirkhof Center & Virtual

GVSU is excited to welcome Bethanie Nonami, award-winning AI facilitator and Certified AI Consultant, for a keynote exploring what AI is, what tools are available to GVSU students, faculty and staff, and how we can think about AI’s impact on well-being, career readiness and environmental sustainability.

Known for “making AI human,” Nonami will help demystify AI and offer practical ways to approach these tools with greater clarity and confidence.

Keynote RSVP

FIRESIDE CHAT
September 24 | 1-1:50 p.m.
DCIH 102/104, City (Health) Campus & Virtual

Join us for an open conversation answering the questions many of us dread: Will AI cost people their jobs? What happens when you learn someone has been running sensitive information through a free tool...for months? What is the environmental impact? What does it mean for career readiness post graduation?

Hosted by Dr. Robert Shorty, VP for People, Equity and Culture, and joined by:

  • Bethanie Nonami, AI Facilitator & Certified AI Consultant
  • Miloš Topić, VP for Information Technology
  • Marouane Kessentini, Dean for the College of Computing

Fireside Chat RSVP

This event is funded in part by the State of Michigan’s KCP Visiting Professors Program.

WCAG Compliance: Next "Fix Your Content Day" in October

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As we shared earlier this year (March message & April message), new regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) require GVSU's digital content to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 guidelines, ensuring our digital content is accessible to everyone by April 26, 2027.

As you continue to work toward ensuring your digital content is accessible for all, we encourage you to explore available resources, tips, and support on the WCAG website, as well as related eLearning training opportunities.

On October 23, 2026, you can drop-in for Fix-Your-Content Day, hosted in support of the WCAG 2.1 accessibility initiative. Stop by between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to work alongside experts from Student Accessibility Resources, eLearning Technologies, and University Libraries.
