Current job title
Writer/Editor
Describe your current position
I'm a writer and editor at a historic collective of design brands.
To what extent does writing relate to your current position? What type of writing/design do you do for work?
Writing comprises most of my work, though strategy and editing fill the rest of my time. I write everything brand related: articles, podcast platform copy, video scripts, social media posts, website pages, sales tools, etc.
Please describe your path from graduation at GVSU to your current position.
Prof. Beth Peterson unknowingly (and thankfully) shaped my path in the design industry. She handed me an internship listing for a startup design magazine that ended up accepting me as an intern and then hiring me as a staff writer in 2018. I worked there for just over four years and dabbled in other interesting pathways: Mostly small business strategy and management, SEO strategy, web development, and finally archives.
I accumulated a resume that somehow got me hired on LinkedIn for my current role within MillerKnoll's global creative studio/brand editorial team (this was 2023). After recently completing my Masters of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, this team also opened a small role for me in the corporate archives.
What parts of the writing major had the strongest impact on you as a professional?
While in the writing major, I felt constantly inspired by the writing around me every day.The smaller class sizes and ability to create my own pathway were reasons that I transferred to GVSU's writing department in the first place. The program offered a pretty expansive experience, and the internships I participated in opened valuable doors for my career.
What advice would you offer to current/future writing majors at Grand Valley?
Try to retain momentum for cultivating your craft, but take space when you need to. Learn the rhythms of your body and brain so that the work comes easier.
