Current job title

Culture & Development Manager

Headshot of Hazel Foster

Describe your current position

I work for a Korean lithium-ion battery manufacturer, LG Energy Solution. My team works to improve the employee experience through training, culture, engagement, and rewards and recognition. We support sites across North America.

To what extent does writing relate to your current position? What type of writing/design do you do for work?

My role involves constant writing and design work, proposals, communications, contracts, policies. As a manager, I am also an editor. I review and approve writing and design from others, including documents as well as videos and e-learning courses. I have also been involved in billboard campaigns, community outreach, delegation visits, marketing events, and other special projects, all requiring strong writing, design, and communication skills.

Please describe your path from graduation at GVSU to your current position.

From GVSU, I went on to an MFA in Creative Writing from Hollins University. I then taught in prep schools in Texas and North Carolina as well as Interlochen Center for the Arts. I taught World Lit, AP Language, and Creative Writing. I also led the student literary magazines. From teaching, I pivoted into corporate learning in 2022. Along the way, I have also maintained a parallel writing career, publishing stories, attending conferences and residencies, while also working on longer projects.

What parts of the writing major had the strongest impact on you as a professional?

My document design class and writing with style were foundational for my current role. However, the best benefits also came from workshop. The skill of giving and receiving feedback has been crucial for both teaching and leading. For myself personally, the act of revision is the most cherished part of the writing process.

What advice would you offer to current/future writing majors at Grand Valley?

Relentlessly pursue opportunity. And when it comes, say yes.
